Vanguard 15 Long Island Sound Championships
June 2-3 2001
The LIS Champs were held June 2-3 at the Larchmont Yacht Club in Larchmont New York. A handful of teams were scared away by the soggy forecast but 18 boats went off the line Saturday afternoon after a 2 hour delay waiting for the breeze. What breeze did fill in was light and from the NE but it did allow for 5 quality races of the W/L/W variety. After day 1 Justin Morel & Ginna Thomson held a 1 point lead over local ace Any Kaplan sailing with Storm Snaith. Sean Fabre & Carlos Lenz won 3 of the 5 but were bogged down by 11th & 12th place finishes.
The rain started to pour down as the fleet arrived at the dock making for a soggy BBQ that evening. The keg felt a little lonely as most teams hightailed it for somewhere dry.
Sunday dawned with a light drizzle & no breeze that had many bemoaning the sailing qualities of Long Island Sound. But the Sound came up large & delivered a 15 knot Southwesterly with sunshine that brought smiles to the collected fleet. Pins were dropping as the breeze built throughout the day & 2 triangles were sailed when the breeze was at it's peek giving the fleet some reaching satisfaction. The right was definitely the money side of the course, many found coming back from the left corner extremely painful. Those that hit the right corner were often launched. Racing was close with the regatta undecided going into the last race. Morel/Thomson sealed victory with a 3 in the final race while Fabre/Lenz sailed a throwout 12 to relegate them to 3rd overall. Fabre/Lenz impressively won 6 of 12 races. 2nd went to the smooth & consistent Larry Ehrhardt sailing with Jean Steege.
Thanks much to all the teams that traveled for this event. Thanks also to the excellent race committee who barely left enough time between races to adjust the rig - great work! Summary Results Below ..
