LARCHMONT YACHT CLUB
LARCHMONT RACE WEEK Vanguard 15 & One Design 14
JULY 21 & 22, 2001
What some affectionately call "Larchmont Drift Week" actually turned out to be a great regatta. Most of the 25 teams attending thought the nickname appropriate as they rocked out to the course on Saturday in a light SSE breeze. The seabreeze never developed as the day progressed leaving the fleet with 4 fairly long (40-50 minutes each), light air races. Current was a big factor as was finding the lanes of pressure - especially downwind. Many went "hero to zero" downwind & others made huge gains on these long legs. Day 1 leader was Larchmonter David Dowd who never dropped out of the top 5 in tricky conditions. There was only a 10 point split between 1st & 6th however setting the stage for some drama on Sunday.
The fleet was feisty Sunday morning taking 3 tries to get the 1st start off, this prompted the I flag to be in effect all day. Conditions were nice, an 8-10 Southerly was in the house all day, although it did have some challenging holes & shifts to keep everyone thinking. Keeping speed in the short chop was a big challenge, many groans were heard as waves that could not be missed washed into boats. Downwind strategy varied race-to-race between winging down the middle or reaching off to the left for more pressure. Reynolds/Core hit the right side in Race 8 & were launched so every side worked at some point. It was pinwheel city at the leeward mark as the fleet compressed down in the puffs although everyone did right – no protests at all this regatta. After 7 races the committee called it a day, it really was a great day of racing.
The Ferrarone/Lyndon team put in a masterful performance on Sunday coming back from 6th at the end of day 1 to win by 8 points. Ted had great starts & speed and seemed to be in the right place at the right time all day – excellent job. Day 1 leader David Dowd ended the day tied with the speedy Reynolds/Core team but broke the tie by virtue of more wins. Litchfield/Wisner sailed a consistent regatta to finish 4th, Tom Allison won 3 but had to eat an OCS as his throwout to finish 5th.
Many thanks to the excellent Larchmont committee led by PRO Peter Kelly. Thanks also to all the teams that traveled to Larchmont for this event, we’ll look forward to seeing you all soon.
