Olympians
Win V15 Florida State Championships
Coconut Grove, Florida, April 8-9, 2000. Husband-wife team Louise and Morgan
Reeser put together four wins and a pair of deuces to win the third annual Florida
State Championship by 7 points over former University of Florida sailor Jeff
Duval, sailing with Ed Kelly of Coconut Grove. Louise Reeser, a 1996 Olympian
(Ireland, 470 class) wouldn't allow a fractured wrist from a roller blading
spill to slow her down: "I just took the cast off, bandaged it up, and
filled my smock pocket with ibuprofen tablets"...Morgan became concerned
when the water and tablets mixed it looked like I was bleeding!" Racing
on Biscayne Bay was extremely close with several boats overlapped at the weather-
and leeward-mark roundings. Conditions varied all over on Saturday from 5 to
10 knots the first three races to 20 to 30 knots in the wild fourth race-in
which a thunderstorm outflow dragged the R/C boat's anchor line within 1 min
to the start, resulting in an expanding gate start. Subsequent gusts at the
weather mark (which also picked up its anchor and was dragging downwind) capsized
over half the fleet. Somehow the committee boat managed to remain on station
to finish all but two starters. Saturday night's activities, organized by Cherie
Branning, included a keg and sodas with hor's d'oervers followed by Jambalaya,
Bourbon Chicken, and Blackened fish catered by the Cajun Grill. On Sunday race
managers Art Auwaerter and Charlie Branning ran three races on a modified olympic
course in a rapidly building northerly following a cold front. The triangles
made for full-on planing on the reaches and the winds were strong enough to
make hiking and upwind planing a premium with daggerboards up nearly halfway
by the last race. Sail One Design, South Florida's premium Vanguard and Gill
dealer, donated prizes and was on hand to outfit the competitors. The Vanguard
15 sailors of Florida presented awards to Coconut Grove Sailing Club and Sail
One Design to recognize their support of one design dinghy racing on Biscayne
Bay.

V15 Atlantic
Coast Championship
New Bern, North Carolina, The new venue for this regatta proved to be a hit.
Fourteen boats representing North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, Maryland, and South
Carolina sailed in extremely shifty breezes that ranged from 5 to 18 kts.
Sailors started rolling in Friday night, pitched tents and awoke Sat. to overcast, slightly chilly conditions. The typical big breezes were definitely present for the sixth year in a row however! The race committee ran 7 great races that day, and when we hit the shore the sun came out, the keg was tapped, and the Pig Pickin' "made for good eats" as we say in the South! Sailors then settled in to the warm clubhouse for some party (assume drinking) games, which included Admirals...QuarterHorse was not played this year, I think Bill Smith still has the quarter from last year....
Sunday was beautiful-sunny, warmer,
and lighter breeze. (Thank goodness, we were sore and bruised from Saterday!)
The race committee popped off 5 more races to finish the regatta; awards-for
first, second, third, top local skipper, most time spent in the mud (4 boats
had black-tipped mains!), novice sailor, and hard luck (Crumley lost his rig
Saterday, when the shroud pulled out of the deck: Bummer)-were presented at
1:30 pm. Results are as follows, thanks to everyone who participated!

Old Bay Mid-Atlantic
Coast Champs
Severn Sailing Assocation, May 6-7, 2000. Sixteen Vanguard 15s showed up for
the Mid Atlantic Coast Champs, hosted by SSA and sponsored by Gill North America,
Annapolis Performance Sailing, and Team Vanguard.
Honestly, I was not sure that there actually was going to be an Old Bay Mid-Atlantic Coast Championships by the looks of things at 1400 on Saturday. No signs of a sea breeze, 90-degree weather, Chesapeake chop, and the St Mary's boys had already broken into their stash of Shaeffers.
We headed in around 1500 without a race completed; we had to check on the Keg and make sure that it tasted okay! According the some of the Laser sailors, it tasted great all the way down to the last drop!
Sunday morning, things still looked pretty awful. Right when I was about to climb under a rock for promoting this regatta as much as I did, SSA's excellent race committee made everyone head out around 1100 and successfully completed four races. Although the chop continued and it wasn't honkin', Sunday turned out to be fun racing in 5 to 8 knots of breeze. The top five boats had some pretty tight racing but Anthony Kotoun and crew Rob Kotler finished 3, 1, 3, 1 to win the regatta with 8 points.
Thanks to Gill, NA for providing
gear for the top-five finishers. Also thanks to Annapolis Performance Sailing
and Team Vanguard. Special thanks the Severn Sailing Assocations' stellar race
committee and Michael Higgins for helping me get the Annapolis V-15s started
again!

Third
Annual Larchmont Spring Regatta
Another great event at LYC! Those who made the trip to Larchmont for the third
annual Larchmont Spring Regatta were treated to an extremely tight 11-race series,
perfect weather, a wide variety of conditions, and all the free beer and hotdogs
they could consume.
Saturday started (at the civilized time of 1300) in a breezy northerly, and saw a three-way tie for first after seven races. The majority of competitors were able to leave their boats on the main docks, ensuring an easy morning on Sunday, and allowing quick access to the barbecue and keg. Sunday dawned windless, but the sea breeze filled in and we got off an additional four races. Jon & Jessie sailed a consistent second day to take the title, with the next five places separated by a mere three points. Awards and a barbecue followed, with great prizes supplied by the Boat Locker.
We hope to see you at our next two events, Larchmont Race Week (July 22-23), and the 2000 Vanguard 15 Nationals (September 30-October 1).-Ted Ferrarone

Shanghai
Regatta
Morehead City Boating Club, North Carolina. The Morehead City Boating Club had
a good turnout for this year's season-opening regatta. The weather forecast
was lessthan favorable putting pressure on the race committee regarding course
placement and whether to brave the forecast conditions at all. The weather eventually
did cooperate giving the group two races in shiftyand challenging conditions.
Twelve skippers and 16 crew filled six Vanguard 15s, 5 Flying Scots, and 1 Thistle.
Roger and Gini Mays sailed with excellent consistency to top theVanguard-15
fleet and took home the Shanghai Trophy. Peter Crumley with crew Mary Crowder
sailed to his best regatta finish yet by taking the second. Newcomer John Worcester
with crew Julie Scope overcame equipment failure to take the third-place spot.

The Blackbeard
North Carolina, June 2-3. The Blackbeard regatta was a great weekend. Once again
they ran some good races and the venue's hard to beat unless you've got Hassingers
in your fleet. Racing was hectic, with numerous 180-degree wind shifts and winds
from zero to 20+ knots. Race 2 started in 2-4 and was recalled. The restart
in the opposite direction saw the leader stall 50 feet from the mark in completely
dead air, only to have the rest of the fleet sail by 25 feet to leeward and
round in a 90-degree lift that built to 15 knots in about 10 microseconds. The
rest of that race was reach, reach, reach at mach 5. The large boats on the
course claimed gusts to 30, but I think 15-22 was the range. Anyway, in the
last race on Saturday with the wind up and Todd sporting a new blacktipped mainsail,
the fleet charged upwind behindPeyton and Jim Hassinger (sail #19). In the wild
frenzy to catch Peyton and Jim madly reaching towards where the leeward mark
was in the previous race, no one except Bill Wiggins (sail #850) and Mary Crowder
noticed the leeward mark was 90 degrees to everyone's right. Bill's walkaway
victory was snatched away by an undeserved capsize that let Roger and Gini Mays
sneak by for the win. Sunday brought light and shifty again, which tested the
patience of the committee as well as the racers. The first race was decided
on a move by Roger and Gini to not gybe at the reach mark, but to go to the
shore, find a bit more wind, and round the leeward mark with a comfortable lead.
While Roger and Gini forced Peyton and Jim to the left to protect theirlead,
Todd pick his way up the middle for his first win of the weekend. Todd continued
to lead around the course for the next race, but had to crash-tack under the
committee boat when he tried to finish a leg early. Roger and Gini were above
on his hip and rolled him en route to their final bullet of the regatta..

July 4th Regatta
North Carolina. Windy and gorgeous! The Morehead Boating Club ran a good set
of races, and Roger and first-time sailor Adam Wilson beat Todd S. and Gini,
John W. with pick-up crew Rene' OConner, Peter and Elizabeth Betts, and George
and son around the buoys for 3 races. Actually, racing was very tight. Todd
and John both led the majority of the races but made some mental errors that
involved flipping too many times to stay on top.The final points were so close
that we can't remember them.
Buzzards
Bay Bash
Wild Harbor Yacht Club, Falmouth, Massachusetts, June 24-25. BBB 2000 was another
smashing success as Buzzards Bay brewed up near-perfect sailing conditions for
two days of racing. Ery Largay and Tim Wadlow were nearly unstoppable in Saturday's
fleet racing, posting 4 bullets in 6 races. They walked away from the 35-boat
fleet by 19 points!
In a post-regatta interview, Wadlow accredited their performance to pure boatspeed. "Upwind, our focus was on keeping steady pressure on the foils, which meant bearing off after stalling in a set of waves and pinching in more breeze or flat water. Instead of constantly moving our weight in and out, I would just steer up and down and keep a steady hike. We also sheeted the jib super tight and were mainly in pinch mode the entire time." On the runs, Wadlow thought that most boats were healed too far to weather.
A not-so-early morning followed Saturday night's BASH portion of the event. However, to the credit of the race committee, a full 11-team round-robin was held. In fact, they averaged about one race every 5 minutes! As always, teams were matched up based on scores from day 1's fleet racing in order to create even teams for Sunday's event. To the delight of the sailors and beachgoers-turned-spectators, the format once again provided intensely close racing all day long.
Many thanks go out to David Fallon, Dorothy Clark, Seth Adams, Mark Fallon, Caroline Clark, Andrew Flynn., and, of course, to Tim's mom, who hosted the party!

MidSummas
Falmouth Yacht Club, Falmouth, Massachusetts, July 22-23. Sailors at Falmouth
Yacht Club this past weekend enjoyed a record-breaking weekend with a turnout
of 25 teams. This was certainly the biggest BYOB team-race regatta ever sponsored
by the USTRA and quite possibly could have been the largest BYOB team-race event
ever held in the United States. On Saturday, we enjoyed a classic Vineyard Sound
day with a S-SW breeze of 15-20 knots and fortunately the seabreeze filled in
on Sunday to squeeze 5 more races in per team as well as a final four. After
sailing on Friday, we all enjoyed a catered Italian buffet, Harpoon Beer, and
acoustic version of our friends Bacchanalia. I hope you all come up with your
own verse for next years rendition of "The Case is Gone". Many thanks
to all of the volunteers who helped out to make this event possible as well
as our PRO Jeff Bresnahan for doing another spectacular job.-Commodore Jones

Vanguard 15 West
Coast 2000 North American Championship
Treasure Island Sailing Center August 18-20. First and Formost, I would like
to thank the St. Francis Yacht Club for hosting the 2000 Vanguard 15 North American
Championship sponsored by Gill North America, Svendsen Boatworks, Harken, and
Vanguard. And special thanks to Sean Svendsen, Nick Adamson, Kara Forman, Rachel
Horsch, Matt Soldo, Debbie Bennett, and all the volunteers that helped made
the V15 North American's debut on the West Coast as good as it was. The North
Americans in the past have been held annually at the Buzzards Bay Regatta in
New England. This year we decided to make this a rotating grand-prix event,
allowing this to be the first out-of-New England NAs, and it was a huge success
all around. For those that could not attend, you should have. The San Francisco
fleet has an incredible venue right in San Francisco Bay off Treasure Island
with the best sailing conditions, complete with a gorgeous view of the Golden
Gate Bridge and downtown San Francisco. We had 41 boats present and 12 races-mostly
local fleeters with some out of towners that came and chartered boats from Sean
Svendsen and came to see what its like to sail in breeze. We used some unusual
courses with offsets, gates, and reaching finishes, which made for some variety
from the "old-school triangle." (thanks to Stan Schreyer, Chuck Norris,
and Julie Batcho for dealing with the charter boats) The first day was light
and shifty 0-6 knots leaving Morgan Larson/Chelsea Wheeler in first after two
races, followed by Nick Adamson/Charlie Boukather, and Steve Bourdow/Ki Mun.
Finished off with a great dinner at St Francis & and beer, of course! Not
to mention, an added bonus of raffle prizes from our sponsors like new jibs
and vests from Vanguard, Gill spray tops, hats & gloves, and harken hats.
The second day was gorgeous until it turned into "the perfect storm!"
Well not quite, but when 16 out of the 41 boats capsized in a 31-knot puff that
rolled through our course, the racing was over for the day. Again, we were spoiled
with a great dinner at the yacht club and intended to go on a bar crawl. Instead,
we filled our bellies and crawled to one bar because we were so exhausted.
The third day was another perfect day filled with 7 races. At the end of a long
weekend, local fleeter and great sailor, Nick Adamson was victorious with his
two crews, Boukather/Harris. Congratulations!-Polly Gibbons-Neff

2000 Hinman
Team-Racing Championship
Chicago Yacht Club, Illinois, September 2-4.The New York Yacht Club won the
United States Sailing Association's U.S.
Team Race Championship for the George R. Hinman Trophy, The event sponsored
by Rolex and Vanguard. Twelve teams competed in conditions that changed throughout
the first two days from glassy 2-knot zephyrs to 20 knots in 2- to 4-foot waves.
Lake Michigan mustered its fiercest forces for the final day of racing: 25 knots
from the northeast, from Chicago the lake's longest fetch, which made for wild
rides in 6- to 8-foot waves for the Vanguard 15s and umpire boats alike.
It was in these conditions that the 2000 Hinman champs, representing New York Yacht Club (Mike Zani/Mike Huang, Chris McDowell/Brandon Prior, and Karl Ziegler/Chris Museler) faced off against Cape Cod Whishbone (Tim Wadlow/Ery Largay, Tim Fallon/Karen Renzuli, Graeme Woodworth/ Mimsey Gordon), the silver medallists at the 1999 ISAF Team Racing Worlds. With strong starts and excellent boat speed, New York Yacht Club defeated Whishbone 3-1 in a best three of five finals.
The highest placing United States team will qualify to represent the U.S. at the 2001 Worlds in Romania. The second highest placing will also qualify for the Worlds if the United States is permitted two entries.-Linda Christofersen

The First-Ever
Vanguard 15 Lunar Regatta
One of the most radical ideas to hit dinghy races began at the Houston Yacht
Club last weekend; the first-ever Vanguard 15 Lunar Regatta. Tower stadium lights
were trucked in to line the jetty as thirteen Vanguard-15's adorned with glow
sticks and flashlights competed in over 20 knots of cold winter breeze. As if
things were not challenging enough, the course required starboard mark roundings
for the benefit of the over 100 spectators.
Spectators lined the jetty avoiding
the biting cold by remaining in their cars, honking their horns as boats screamed
within 20 yards before flying around the jibe mark. 1999 Vanguard National Champion,
Kevin Funsch, described crossing the fleet on port as "truly frightening,
but a blast." The 5 race event was won by Baylor U. college sailor Brent
Marsden, second place went to ICYRA North American Singlehanded Champion, Bruce
Mahoney. Farley "Frogman" Fontenot was third. HYC is hosting the V15
National Championship next October.

Tim Wadlow & Ery Largay top 53 boat field to win the 2000 Vanguard 15 National Championships!
53 Vanguard 15's made the journey to Larchmont YC for the 2000 Vanguard 15 National Championships, with a fleet featuring sailors from Texas, California, New England and the Middle Atlantic, weekend warriors, collegiate all-americans, husbands & wives, brothers & sisters, fathers & daughters, and ages ranging from 15 to 51!
Saturday morning dawned windless and cold, and although the temperature increased, the breeze showed little sign of doing so. After watching 50 Sonars leave the dock in approximately zero knots of breeze (who knew you could rock a Sonar upwind?) and a skipper's meeting punctuated by the insightful commentary of Senet Bischoff, Esq., the fleet took an extra half-hour on shore. An 11:30 harbor start showed little increase in the breeze, but at 2:00, the wind gods threw the switch. Despite a shiftier-than anticipated southerly, the expert LYC race committee snapped off 5 windward leeward races in 8-12 kts. Although the marks and line had to be re-set for each race, there was literally no down-time between races, and only one general recall. Incredibly tight racing put a premium on good starts & consistent sailing, with nearly every team chalking up at least one "big" finish. As the sun set and temperature dropped, the Vanguards charged back to LYC to find that a) nearly everyone's boats could be left on the docks (nice) b) a heated tent had been erected for dinner (even nicer), and c) the Sonar fleet had dug into the free Mount Gay, well, like a bunch of keel boat sailors at a Mount Gay tent (not so nice). Despite the dwindling supply of rum, a copious amount of free beer materialized, enabling a well-lubricated post-sailing barbecue dinner, complete with make-your-own sundaes. The Wingnuts supplied the tunes, Shaefer supplied the brew, and a good time was had by all. Sunday morning showed a repeat of Saturday. The Sonars left the dock, followed soon thereafter by the Vanguards. Despite a half-dozen fits & starts, the breeze failed to materialize, and at 2:30, the LYC Committee called it a day. A nice sea breeze filled as the fleet de-rigged, and chili-cheese dogs and more beer provided pre-awards sustenance (and a potentially eruptive drive home). As there were no races on Sunday, the awards were never in doubt, and, with no throw out, Tim & Ery's consistent finishing gave them the title. A high-stakes raffle of goodies from Thule Racks, Guck Inc, Vanguard, and Gill NA provided the final entertainment.

Long Island
Sound Championships
Well, those of you who skipped the LIS Championships this past weekend at Cedar
Point Yacht Club missed a great event. Yes, the forecast was for temperatures
in the 40s, wind in the 30s and rain, but what we got were two bright sunny
days with 12 knot breezes on Saturday and 12-18 knots on sunday. We got 14 races
with enough time for on the water lunches and still got everyone in by 3:00
on Sunday afternoon.
It was great fall racing for the 13 boats which came. Shifty winds, bright skies, planing reaches, (and yes, crisp temperatures). There was also a great dinner and even pitchers of beer in the locker rooms during showers! We hope to see more boats next year!-Michael Colnes
